| About the Artist
Joan Waff, native to Norfolk, Va., began painting when she was 8 years old.
Amelia Nichols, a well-known artist from Massachusetts, took care of her and her
twin sister after the sudden death of their mother. Joan would sit by “Mema” for
hours, painting with her and listening to her art stories.
Self-taught in porcelain doll making and china painting in the 70's, Joan sold
“heads and hands” kits, including sewing instructions for clothes and body,
across the U.S. Joan joined the juried Albemarle’s Craftsman’s Guild of
Elizabeth City, N.C. Her porcelain dolls were displayed in the Elizabeth City
Art Museum and Art Gallery and chosen to represent the Guild at the Yorktown,
Va. Fair. President Regan attended the Yorktown event and it was an honor to be
chosen to be a part of this history. All participants came from all parts of
Virginia, representing their Guilds.
Moving to Swansboro, N.C. in the early 80s, Joan sold painted pots to local
shops. She did commissioned fabric painting on t-shirts, hats, and sweatshirts
for the local golf club. Joan belonged to the juried Mattie King Art Gallery of
Beaufort, N.C., selling her painted pots.
Joan taught landscapes and seascapes in a local craft shop in Swansboro, N.C.
She became a One Stroke Certified Instructor in June 2002. She created her
online One Stroke classes and then, moving to St. Petersburg, FL in 2002, she
taught One Stroke painting, acrylics, and fabric painting at Crafts & Stuff,
Michaels, and Sunken Gardens.
Currently, Joan teaches One Stroke and Acrylics at the Pinellas Park Senior
Center. Besides selling her artwork on her website, Joan paints cards and puzzle
cards for the Sunken Gardens Shop, in St. Petersburg, FL
