| About the Artist
Bill Stephens started drawing as a youngster. He was lucky enough to have one of the most understanding and encouraging art teachers starting in the fifth grade. Mrs. Christine Tibbot of the Peabody School in Nashville, Tennessee gave him unlimited opportunities to explore all phases of art. After moving to Florida he continued taking art courses in high school. He attended Florida State University, where he majored in art. Bill taught art in the public schools of Pensacola, Florida until he went back to graduate school in 1965. While at The University of Southern Mississippi he pursued a Masters Degree in School Administration during the evening. During the day he was able to take more art courses. While working on his degree he was asked to teach Art Education during the day for the Art Department. After completing his Masters Degree, he was given a full fellowship to work toward a Doctorate in Elementary Education which he received in 1969. Bill came to Valdosta State where he taught for twenty five years.
During those years teaching Elementary Teachers he had little time to pursue his first love, art. After he retired he started taking art courses from different instructors through The Continuing Education Department at Valdosta State. It has been a long process getting back to a level of some competence. Bill loves oil and acrylic as his primary medium and he enjoys collage. He has dabbled in watercolor but finds it very challenging. He has no specific style but loves to try a lot of different approaches, hence the eclectic approach to art that you see in his work. Although Bill taught art in public schools of Florida and at the university level in Mississippi he continues his art education by earning his Alexander Certified Instructor certification and attending workshops under Gloria Mani and Bill Bayer.
