| About the Artist
Joyce began her art career in Alaska over 40 years ago at her kitchen table with
the small easel and paint set from “ green stamps “ she saved. She won first
place in the Alaska State Fair and Alaska grand champion.
Relocating to
Southern California Joyce focused on seascape painting and exhibited her work in
the Santa Barbara Art Show. Wearing her roller skates and meeting people from
all over the world who loved and bought her paintings. Ortner shared the things
she learned by teaching classes and workshops in community centers, adult
education classes , university extension programs and art stores across the
country and in Alaska. She met Bob Ross, who was so impressed with her seascapes
he invited her to appear on his show as a guest artist. The success of these
videos in 24 countries around the world made Joyce a popular and sought-after
teacher.
