About the Artist

As a third generation San Franciscan, James Gleeson's appreciation of his native city span many generations.  This deeply grounded sense of place permeates all of his work, particularly his paintings of San Francisco's historic buildings.  From the city's quaint Cable Cars and historic Victorians, to the tourist filled waterfront, Gleeson finds a wealth of inspiration for his boldly colored, light infused paintings.  A graduate of the University of San Francisco and the Academy of Art college, James holds BFA Degree as well as a Certificate in illustration.  His award winning works are in many corporate and museum collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, the American Embassy in Belize and the San Francisco Marriott Hotel.  His commission and commercial work are also well known.  These clients include the San Francisco Giants, Fox Television, United Parcel Service, Boudin Bakery and Gordon Beirsch.

He is currently on the faculty of the Academy of Art College in San Francisco where he is a drawing instructor. He is a product demonstrator for the Windsor & Newton Corp as well as the Liquitex paint company. The professional demonstrations he gives to adult art organizations nationwide are both fun and informative. He is a certified gold level demonstrator/instructor for the ColArt Corp.

Articles in Grumbacher's Palette Talk magazine and the Artist's Magazine as well as the magazine put out by Liquitex called Liquitext, are a tribute to Mr. Gleesons technical and teaching skills. Many of the juried art exhibits that James once entered now request him as a juror. He is past president of the Society of Western Artists and was on the Artists Council for SF Open studios and is involved with many local arts organizations throughout the Bay Area. He is currently working on a TV series to be aired locally called How2art and the web site called how2art.com.
