About the Artist
COMMERCIAL
ART: I have an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. While at South Georgia College, I was elected to Who’s Who Among Junior
Colleges. However, my third year of college was at Georgia Southern University
majoring in Education-with a 4.0 GPA. I passed the Commercial Art National Occupational Competency (NOCTI)
written test with a Georgia’s record-breaking score of 99. I accepted an involuntary retirement when all full-time Georgia educators
were eliminated from the Department of Corrections.
FINE ART: In the early
‘70s, my husband and I owned and operated a part-time ceramic shop. I taught all
aspects of the craft and my classes included children as well as adults. Then I began Tole Painting and acrylic canvas classes. The canvas work grew into class/client demand to justify a home studio in
1992. Until that time, I was
basically self-taught. But, in March 1992, I was certified in the charter acrylic
instructors class for Brenda Harris at Alexander Art Headquarters. Since that
time I’ve been a certified instructor for Koh-I-nor/Grumbacher, Silver Level (KCA)
and Col-Art.
TELEVISION: While
holding down a full time position and giving art classes at home, in the spring
of 1993, I began an 18-month television series for WUBI, Channel 34, Baxley,
Georgia. My 30-minute show aired
each Saturday at 2:30 PM. A total
of thirty-eight shows were taped. Now that I’m retired, I’d love to pursue this aspect again.
I
have studied with other nationally known artists such as Joan Darflinger, Este
Rayle, and Fred Wetzel. Within our
ARTIST TEAM group, there are many well-qualified instructors and dedicated
artists from whom I’ve learned artists’ insider tips but also the value of
friendship. “United we stand; divided we fall.”
